Throw it away: Virgin and BPI oposite to illegal downloaders

Virgin Media and the British Phonographic Institute (BPI) are to send warning letters to customers they believe are downloading or distributing music illegally. The announcement represents the first such public deal between the BPI and an ISP.

The pair hope that the new campaign will avoid users risking disconnection and possible legal action.

"Virgin Media's fibre optic broadband is a great platform for people who want to download lots of music,"

said Virgin Media in a statement.

"But we want them to do so without infringing the rights of musicians and music companies."

Customers whose accounts appear to have been used to distribute music in breach of copyright will receive "informative letters" from Virgin Media and the BPI.

What's this? I mean no one is free? This is too much. I mean all the artists and makers of movies and music are already getting much more then they need. They are 'they' because of people like them. People like them because maximum people watch or here them, out of them many are using pirated copies but it makes them more fans. They say they loss money, but i think they got popular with piracy. What you think? If Virgin media is doing this, then what you could download you can understand ;). So better don't use it, throw away it and take some another connection if possible which is not having such crappy rules about how your should use the network after paying much money to keep their mouth shut!

I think all media must be free to public once its out of theaters or published. If they don't like piracy, don't buy bulk pricey expensive DVDs,CDs etc. They made by us, can be fallen by us!

Music 2.0: Engineers giving MT9 format

Korean computer engineers are introducing a new digital music format that has a six-channel audio equalizer and separate controls on the sound volume for each musical instrument, such as guitar, drum, base and voice. The new format, which has a file extension format of MT9 and a commercial title of "Music 2.0", is poised to replace the popular MP3 file format as the de-facto standard of the digital music source, its inventors say.

The MT9 technology was selected as a candidate item for the new digital music standard at the last regular meeting of Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG), the international body of the digital music and video industry.

Ham says that the music industry should change its attitude to the market as music is becoming a digital service, rather than a physical product. Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are both interested in equipping their mobile phones with an MT9 player and their first commercial products are likely to debut early next year, he said.

Unlike other digital formats exclusively used by big companies, Audizen (the venture company behind the development) allows users to copy the MT9 files, making it a more attractive format.

"It's like having a CD or cassette tape. Once you buy it, you can lend it to your friends. We don't want to be too fussy about DRM (digital right management),''

said Ham Seung-chul, chief of Audizen.

500,000 GB MP3 Player!

Can you even imagine an MP3 player with a 500,000 GB capacity? It’s pretty much beyond belief. The most generous player today can only hold around 40,000 songs – they’d hardly make a dent on this.

The thing is, it could easily happen. Scientists at the University of Glasgow have created a nanotechnology breakthrough that could increase storage capacity by 150,000 times. It could mean 500,000 GB on a single chip and inch square.

MetatOGGer 3.0 - audio tagging and renaming tool

MetatOGGer enables you to tag, rename and organize your Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, Speex and MP3 files. It allows you to rename files based on their existing tags and also by their folder path (useful if your folder path contains the relevant artist and album names). If you have music files with generic names (e.g track1.mp3) and no tags, the built-in acoustic fingerprint look-up (powered by MuzicBrainz) may be able to identify and tag the files for you. MetatOGGer can also gather artist information from a local database which is faster than online look-up but requires you to download the database file first. Other features include file organizing based on tag info (copy, move etc.), manual tagging and cleaning of unwanted tags.

Apple Sued Over iTunes Technology

Apple was sued Wednesday over allegations that its iTunes online music store and iPod music players are illegally using a patented method for distributing digital media over the Internet. Atlanta-based ZapMedia Services Inc. sued Apple in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, accusing the Cupertino-based company of violating two ZapMedia patents, demanding royalties on Apple's sales of iPods and iTunes music, which reached nearly $11 billion last year. The patents in question cover a way of sending music and other digital content from servers to multiple media players, a broad description that could also apply to a wide swath of other companies selling digital media and the devices to play it.

ZapMedia applied for the patents in 1999. One was granted in March 2006, the other on Tuesday. ZapMedia said it met with Apple to discuss licensing, but Apple rebuffed the offer.

"When someone takes our vision and our intellectual property without a license after several attempts, we have no option but to protect it through every means available to us,"

- Robert Frohwein, ZapMedia's general counsel

said in a statement. An Apple spokeswoman said the company doesn't comment on pending lawsuits.

Microsoft Launches UltimatePC.com...

Microsoft has provided an update for its Vista Ultimate plans. UltimatePC.com is a new website where Microsoft is hosting "blueprints" of the best PCs available and exactly what you can achieve with them. Although the domain name was transferred last October, Microsoft has only decided to make use of it now.

A small section of the site is "ultimate exclusives". According to Microsoft these are not replacing Ultimate Extras. The reason given for the poor amount of extras is the high amount of testing and quality required for them to ship. I would love to see Microsoft simply release powertoys like they did with XP. In Vista you are not even able to right click a picture and resize it quickly without using 3rd party software. Extras like the XP powertoys are similar to what people expect.

Windowsultimate.com will be directed to ultimatepc.com. Microsoft is teaming up with various partners to offer discounts to ultimate customers. It's not clear how they will ensure only ultimate customers have access to the discounts. One of the interesting discounts available is Stardock's Multiplicity Pro for only $29.95 .

Until Microsoft start providing a time line about Ultimate Extras this is little more than a marketing site with little benefit to those who have paid a premium price for a poker game and to play videos as desktop wallpapers. Hopefully the new site will provide a place for the ultimate team to communicate to the community its current and future plans.

VideoLAN is an excellent multimedia player with it's own plugins for playing different formats, so it doesn't need any codecs to be installed. It works great for previewing partially downloaded files too as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

MySpace working on music service

MySpace Music is the name News Corp. executives are tentatively using for a proposed music service that they are pitching to record executives, two sources told CNET News.com.

The news that News Corp., MySpace's parent company, has approached the four top music labels was first reported over the weekend by the blog PaidContent. Here are a few new details on what News Corp. is running past the music companies.

News Corp. has tested the record industry's interest in a site that would offer music in several different ways, including ad-supported downloads and streaming to PCs, according to a source with knowledge of the talks. This may be why PaidContent reported that News Corp. was proposing an ad-supported download service while the blog Silicon Alley Insider said the company was backing a streaming service.
