Nvidia Launches DirectX 10 Graphics Card for $299

Partners of Nvidia Corp., the world’s largest supplier of standalone graphics processors, have unveiled a 320MB flavour of the GeForce 8800 GTS (the other flavour has 640MB memory onboard). The graphics card sports the fully-fledged GeForce 8800 GTS chip with 500MHz clock-speed, 96 stream processors at 1200MHz , 24 texture mapping units and 20 raster operation units as well as 320-bit memory bus. You’ll be able to get this DirectX 10-compatible graphics boards starting from $299, about $100 less than the price of the cheapest GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB.

Intel demonstrates 80-core processor

Intel is well and truly kicking off the start of a multi-core war with the demonstration of an 80-core research processor in San Francisco last week. It's not the first multi-core processor to reach double figures -- a company called ClearSpeed put 96 cores onto one of its CPUs -- but it's the first to be accompanied by the aim of making it generally available; an aim that Intel hopes to realize within a five year timeframe. The long time frame is required because current operating systems and software don't take full advantage of the benefits of multi-core processors. In order for Intel to successfully market processors with CPUs that have more than say, 4 cores, there needs to be an equal effort from software programmers, which is why producing an 80-core processor is only half the battle.

Firefox popup exploit allows file snooping

A vulnerability in Firefox's popup blocker software creates a means to read files from affected systems, security researchers warn. The flaw, coupled with some tricksy coding, establishes a mechanism for hackers to read user-accessible files on vulnerable system, thereby creating a means to swipe sensitive information. Firefox version 1.5.0.9 is known to be exposed to the exploit. Other versions of the popular web surfing package might also be affected.

The vulnerability was discovered by security researcher Michal Zalewski who said the exploit relies in part on the fact that normal URL permission checks, which would stop remote sites from accessing a user's filespace, are bypassed when a user chooses to manually allow a blocked popup.
