The Pirate Bay Sees a Future Without BitTorrent

The guys from The Pirate Bay are always working on interesting side-projects, but there is one in particular that’s so significant, it might be the future of filesharing. For a while now, they have been working on a brand new protocol - which may come to replace BitTorrent in the near future. Why a new protocol? Well, the current BitTorrent protocol is developed and maintained by BitTorrent Inc. This company, founded by BitTorrent inventor Bram Cohen, recently decided to close the source of some newer additions to the protocol. According to The Pirate Bay, this gives them too much power and influence.

Another reason for a new and improved protocol is the massive number of spammers and anti-piracy organizations that abuse the BitTorrent protocol, either to make money or to bust people who download infringing material. The new protocol will be designed with these potential problems in mind. The protocol will most likely use the .p2p file extension compared to the .torrent extension BitTorrent uses right now. The good thing is that the .p2p files will be backwards compatible which should ensure a smooth transition from .torrent to .p2p files.

Apple sells 2M MAC OS X Leopard in first weekend

Apple said Tuesday that it sold over two million copies of Mac OS X Leopard since its release on Friday, far outpacing the first-weekend sales of Mac OS X Tiger, which was previously the most successful OS release in the company's history.

Sales included copies sold at Apple's retail stores, Apple Authorized Resellers, the online Apple Store, under maintenance agreements and bundled with new Mac computers. In comparison, it took the Cupertino-based Mac maker approximately six weeks to ship its 2 millionth copy of Mac OS X Tiger back in 2005.

"Early indications are that Leopard will be a huge hit with customers," said Apple chief executive Steve Jobs. "Leopard's innovative features are getting great reviews and making more people than ever think about switching to the Mac."

Leopard is the sixth major release of Mac OS X and is packed with more than 300 new features. Among them is Time Machine, an effortless way to automatically back up everything on a Mac; a redesigned Finder that lets users quickly browse and share files between multiple Macs; Quick Look, a new way to instantly see files without opening an application; Spaces, an intuitive new feature used to create groups of applications and instantly switch between them; a brand new desktop with Stacks, a new way to easily access files from the Dock; and major enhancements to Mail and iChat.

Google explains PageRank tweak

Google has confirmed that the recent update to its "visible PageRank" system is an effort to crackdown on sites trying to rig this closely-watched web popularity contest. Over the weekend, Google search engine guru Matt Cutts told Search Engine Journal that the company is intent on punishing web publishers that attempt to sell their PageRank currency to other sites.

A site with a high PageRank can often boost the rank of a less-popular site simply by linking to it. As a result, popular sites will often provide such links in exchange for cash. And Google doesn't like that.

Sun against MS - promotes OpenOffice

Windows users who have an older version of Java SE Runtime Environment and have yet to install Update 3, which was released earlier this month, will be getting the usual "on the 26 of each month" update prompt from Sun. This month, the emphasis doesn't seem to be on Java, though. Sun has decided to promote its Microsoft Office alternative. Right below the words "A new version is ready to be installed!" is the advertisement: "To get a FREE copy of OpenOffice, the global standard in free Microsoft Office compatible productivity software, just click the More Information link below." Now, Java is a program that has been adopted as an Internet standard in its own playing field, and it is installed on the larger majority of computers that are online. Sun may not directly convert Microsoft users, but it may just get out there to all of those that are frustrated that their trial of Microsoft Office has expired. A little sly on Sun's part, but it might just prove to be a smart move.

The DivX All In One Fix 1.8

The quick fix will resolve most of the common problems you can encounter using the DivX Software. These fixes will typically inspect, reconfigure or disable third party software known to interfere with the normal use of DivX for Windows Software. Some sections contain options for removing many filters that have the *potential* to interfere with the good operation of DivX for Windows. Some filters here may be required by other software on your system and by removing it, they may not run properly. You use this program entirely at your own risks.

With DivX All In One Fix you can do things like:

Audio Codecs Missing
MPEG1 Audio Codec Missing
This component will un-register the default mp3 filter that comes with your Operating System and then re-register it: "l3codecx.ax"

LPCM Audio Codec Missing
This component will un-register the LPCM audio codec and then re-register it: "mlcom.ax"

Video Display Problem
Remove Bicubic resize filter - Included in many codec packs ex.: Nimo - Can cause no video to appear, or video that is upside down or mirrored.
Remove XviD filter - This removes the XviD DirectShow decoder filter. Many codec packs ex.:. Nimo feature Nic's build of the DirectShow filter that steals playback of DivX FourCC's. Unfortunately, most of these build can not playback all DX5 series video and the result is the start of files not playing, video appearing green, or other artifacting.
Remove G400 filter - This filter is part of several codec packs, including Nimo's, and causes video to play upside down. It should only be installed on systems using Matrox G400 cards in the first place.
Remove DivX Anti-freeze filter - This filter is included in codec packs (inc. Nimo) - May cause some instability with DivX Codec and Dr DivX as well.

Player Off Limits
Sometime, when opening the DivX Player, it goes out of the screen but it is in the taskbar. This component will bring back the player in the middle of the screen. The player needs to be close before you run this fix.

Burning Engine Update
This will update the DivX Player Burning Engine to the latest version.

Ordinal Error
If you receive "ordinal 2250 can't be found in PX.dll" error when starting the player, this component of the fix, will solve the problem.....

Mozilla Rushes to Release 2.0.0.9 to Fix New Issues

Mozilla Corp. will rush another version of Firefox to users as early as next week, the company's user interface designer said Tuesday, to fix five bugs it introduced in last Wednesday's security update. Firefox 2.0.0.8 patched ten vulnerabilities, including three critical flaws, but also shipped with five regression bugs -- problems unintentionally introduced when code was changed to plug other holes. "Most users won't see any difference or experience any problems," said Mike Beltzner of Mozilla in a posting to the company's development center blog. "We're working fast to understand and fix these problems, and will shortly be issuing a 2.0.0.9 update to address them."

According to notes from a weekly Mozilla meeting on Firefox, the regression reports began accumulating over the weekend. Firefox 2.0.0.8 was posted for download late Wednesday, Oct. 17. Three of the five problems were limited to Windows, but two page rendering issues affected all versions of the browser, including those for Mac OS X and Linux. The Windows-specific bugs included one that disables Firefox extensions after updating. The problem doesn't affect every copy of 2.0.0.8 on Windows -- one user said it had hit just one of his four PCs -- and can be remedied by deleting a trio of files from the hard drive. Programmers are still working on a fix.

Mozilla Labs: Prism

Mozilla Labs is launching a series of experiments to bridge the divide in the user experience between web applications and desktop apps and to explore new usability models as the line between traditional desktop and new web applications continues to blur. Unlike Adobe AIR and Microsoft Silverlight, we’re not building a proprietary platform to replace the web. We think the web is a powerful and open platform for this sort of innovation, so our goal is to identify and facilitate the development of enhancements that bring the advantages of desktop apps to the web platform.

Gmail Gets IMAP

It appears that Google is working on integrating IMAP into Gmail. Download Squad reader eD! Thomas sent in a tip letting us know he came across the new IMAP setting while snooping around Gmail. However, it is only appearing in select few Gmail and Google Apps for domains accounts at the moment.

When we checked Gmail Help database this evening, Gmail had said that they support POP, but not IMAP. Then a few minutes later, that doc was gone, and a stack of IMAP related help docs were up. The new pages explain how to integrate the new mail feature. It's as easy as setting up POP, but with huge benefits.

Why is IMAP integration a good thing for Gmail? POP was a stepping stone, but IMAP pushes Gmails benefits over the top. With IMAP, users can now access their email via a desktop application like Outlook or Thunderbird, read emails, make changes, delete, and have the changes made across platforms. So if you now log into your Gmail account, the message which you read in Thunderbird, will now be marked accordingly. No more wasting time trying to sift through emails that had already been answered.

Take a peek under your Settings in Gmail, and click into your 'Forwarding and POP IMAP' tab to see if you are one of the lucky ones who got IMAP first.

Canon Introduces New Scanners

Canon U.S.A. is shipping its ScanFront 220 and ScanFront 220P network scanners, which were displayed at the AIIM Conference & Expo in Boston in April of this year. Both models have decent speeds, able to scan letter-sized documents at up to 26 ppm (pages per minute) or 35 ipm (images per minute), as well as capture black-and-white, grayscale and color images. Supported file formats include JPEG, TIFF, and searchable and high-compression PDF.

According to Canon officials, the new ScanFront 220 and 220P take up less desk space than most competitive models. Both scanners can be controlled via an 8.5-inch touch-screen on which users can preview documents, and both support "scan-to" destinations, including e-mail, "folder," FTP and USB. The ScanFront 220 and 220P are available now through authorized Canon dealers and resellers, though the pricing clearly puts the devices as business oriented models: the 220 starts at $1,995, while the 220P starts at $2,195.

Get your iGoogle in 42 languages

Earlier this week, iGoogle launched in 13 new languages, bringing the total number of supported languages to 42 and the total number of country domains supported to over 70. For those of you who don't know, iGoogle is a personalized version of the Google homepage that lets you select the content that matters to you most from across the web and arrange it in a way that you find useful and fun. People rely on iGoogle to save time by putting all the information and services they need in one place. They also use it to discover new content through the iGoogle gadget directory.

With this launch, more than 99% of Internet users can take advantage of these features in their native language, which is really exciting for us. We're particularly curious to see what iGoogle ends up looking like in these new languages. For example, who would have guessed that 'Tu Nombre en Japonés' (Your name in Japanese) would be among the top 20 gadgets in Chile and Spain? (Mine is Jえすしか, by the way.) Because users and developers ultimately decide what iGoogle will look like in each of these new domains, we can't be sure what will be popular, which is part of the fun.

Here's a list of the new languages available:

* Arabic
* Bulgarian
* Catalan
* Croatian
* Icelandic
* Indonesian
* Latvian
* Lithuanian
* Malay
* Serbian
* Slovak
* Slovenian
* Tagalog

Blogger - Transform 2-column Template to 3-column

People are always curious about how to use maximum space on blogger. The default templates are very simple and disgusting. We need something new after all. So take any template from blogger or another where you can get blogger compatible templates. And then do changes as per the instructions.

First goto your HTML template code and save it in your machine before starting changes.

Find

#header-wrapper {
in your HTML code

Change value for width like width:860px; if its small value.This will make your blog's width wide and gives you more space fro your content and ads.By default width is about 660 pixels.

Find

#outer-wrapper {
width: 860px;
margin:0 auto;
padding:10px;
text-align:left;
font: $bodyfont;
}

#main-wrapper {
width: 410px;
float: left;
word-wrap: break-word; /* fix for long text breaking sidebar float in IE */
overflow: hidden; /* fix for long non-text content breaking IE sidebar float */
}

#sidebar-wrapper {
width: 210px;
float: right;
word-wrap: break-word; /* fix for long text breaking sidebar float in IE */
overflow: hidden; /* fix for long non-text content breaking IE sidebar float
*/
}

#left-sidebar-wrapper {
width: 210px;
float: left;
word-wrap: break-word;
overflow: hidden;
}

and colored lines are changes or new additions. here left-sidebar-wrapper is for new sidebar. I have changed the widths as per total width of 860 pixels. For example 2 sidebars, each of 210 pixels(by default it is 220) and main post column is of 410 pixels.

Find
<div id="content-wrapper"> and add below code after this line

<div id="left-sidebar-wrapper">
<b:section class="sidebar" id="sidebar1" preferred="yes">
</b:section>
</div>

Now save your template and goto Layout tab.

You will get new sidebar in design. Then you can add your new widgets in it. Use your whole blog.manage all your data as you wish. You can make it more wider if you need.

PayPal Phishing Scam Warning

Security firm F-Secure is warning of a PayPal phishing scam in circulation that seeks to steal your personal information.

A fake website, which is designed to look like PayPal, was registered three weeks ago to someone using the name Asger Trier Bing, from Copenhagen, and the site is hosted in Denmark.

With the domain name servicecenter-us-eu.dk, F-Secure describes the scam as being "old school" in its approach. When you visit the site you are asked to input some details, then it takes you to another webpage for some "additional security checks", which include questions about your parents' full names and bank card PIN.

"It is quite astonishing if anybody would be gullible enough to go through the full form and type in all the required information. Like your email password? Your father's day of birth? Your PIN number? Then again... someone will fall for this. Someone always does," said F-Secure's Mikko Hypponen.

Betavoltaic batteries offer 30 years of functioning without recharging

All the electronic devices are based on electricity. And when you run out of battery that’s a big problem. I mean, it happens when you need the device mostly. However, this problem seems to be eradicated once the Betavoltaic batteries will enter the scene.

The scientists form U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory have discovered the miracle of producing energy for 30 years without recharging. The secret - the Betavoltaic batteries that are constructed from semiconductors and use radioisotopes as the energy source.

The batteries are not nuclear as you may think so. The energy is produced when an electron strikes a particular interface between two layers of material. The scientists assure us that no radioactive or chemical reactions are produced during the process. That’s why these batteries won’t be an environmental problem. After their life cycle the Betavoltaic batteries are totally inert and non-toxic.

Probably in a few years we could use them without problems. So, think a little about the great advantage of non-charging your laptop around 30 years. First you won’t need regular energy power. And second, you will need a cool laptop because in so many years it will be outdated.

Security experts have discovered vulnerabilities in OpenOffice.org that could allow attackers to remotely execute code on Linux, Windows or Apple Mac-based computers. OpenOffice version 2.0.4 and earlier versions are vulnerable to maliciously crafted TIFF files, which can be delivered in an e-mail attachment, published on a Web site or shared using peer-to-peer software. The next version of OpenOffice (version 2.3) arrived on September 17 and is not affected by the flaw. The vulnerability was discovered by researchers at iDefense, who claim that the OpenOffice TIFF parsing code is flawed.

"When parsing the TIFF directory entries for certain tags, the parser uses untrusted values from the file to calculate the amount of memory to allocate. By providing specially crafted values, an integer overflow occurs in this calculation. This results in the allocation of a buffer of insufficient size, which in turn leads to a heap overflow," the iDefense team reported last Friday. TrustDefender co-founder Andreas Baumhof said: "This vulnerability allows someone to execute malicious code on your computer. It's an OpenOffice bug so it doesn't matter what type of operating system you run; it allows you to run malicious software with the same rights as the user who runs OpenOffice." "At this stage, it's only confirmed on Linux," Baumhof said. "But typically it would affect all operating systems. The only difference with Linux and Windows is that home users typically run Windows as the administrator."
