Apple Mac hacked!

The fastest $10,000 Charlie Miller ever earned!

He took the first of three laptop computers -- and a $10,000 cash prize -- Thursday after breaking into a MacBook Air at the CanSecWest security conference's PWN 2 OWN hacking contest.

Show organizers offered a Sony Vaio, Fujitsu U810, and the MacBook as prizes, saying that they could be won by anybody at the show who could find a way to hack into each of them and read the contents of a file on the system using a previously undisclosed "0day" attack.

Within 2 minutes, he directed the contest's organizers to visit a Web site that contained his exploit code, which then allowed him to seize control of the computer, as about 20 onlookers cheered him on. He was the first contestant to attempt an attack on any of the systems.

Miller was quickly given a nondisclosure agreement to sign, and he's not allowed to discuss particulars of his bug until the contest's sponsor, TippingPoint, can notify the vendor. Contest rules state that Miller could only take advantage of software that was preinstalled on the Mac, so the flaw he exploited must have been accessible by, or possibly inside, Apple's Safari browser.

Vista SP1 failed to spark migration

Microsoft's latest efforts to persuade customers to upgrade to its much-maligned Vista operating system have met with a cool response from users. Historically, Microsoft's first service pack for one of its marquee products – such as Windows – provides the impetus for users to upgrade. As Gartner analyst, Stephen Kleynhans recently noted, customers see SP1 as the sign that the OS has reached maturity and is ready for enteprise deployment.

But even the offer of free support for using installing Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) and tools to lower implementation cost, the user response has been one of stony indifference. Vista SP1 includes a number of fixes for bugs that have plagued the operating system, as well as improved support for drivers. It initially became available to download from Microsoft's website and will be included as part of the Window's Update feature from mid-April.

iPhone SDK Second Beta Released

Apple has sent an email to developers in its program informing them that the second beta was available for download on the company's Developer Connection web site.

"The second beta version of the iPhone SDK includes Interface Builder, Xcode IDE, Instruments, iPhone simulator, frameworks and samples, compilers, and Shark analysis tool," the site reads. Interface Builder is "an application for designing and testing user interfaces. Developers can use Interface Builder to create user interfaces that follow the Mac OS X human-interface guidelines by dragging user-interface elements from a palette of predefined controls and dropping them into the window or view they are configuring," according to Apple.

Build 12 offers one main new feature: multiaccount ICQ protocol. As usual, it may be a bit unstable because of the enormous amount of changes made in it, but it works more or less ok on my machine.

Also, clist_modern contains a large portion of new & redesigned code.

Nothing else was added, just some bugfixes to MSN & Jabber.

Flaws in Safari browser for Windows

We had just a discussion on this that its not as good and FF3 and stick to FF3 is better, this is what i found today.

An Argentinian security researcher has discovered two flaws in Apple's Safari for Windows browser. Juan Pablo Lopez Yacubian said the vulnerabilities could allow hackers to remotely take control of a victim's computer.

He described the most serious flaw as a vulnerability in the Safari 3.1 browser for Windows which allows a hacker to “falsify the web address and enter another page or content".

This essentially means that even though you see a trusted URL in the browser address bar, the web page could be displaying unauthorized content that could put your PC at risk.

Recover deleted files on an ext3 file system

It happens to everyone sooner or later: a split second after you hit Enter you realize your mistake, but it's too late; you just deleted a valuable file or directory for which no backup exists. Or maybe you have a backup, but it's a month old... and in shock you see the past month flash before your eyes as you realize in pain what you'll have to do all over again...

Fortunately, you remember that files are never really deleted, at most overwritten by new content. So, you remount the disk read-only as fast as possible. But now?

The most frequently quoted passage comes from the ext3 FAQ itself:
Q: How can I recover (undelete) deleted files from my ext3 partition?

Actually, you can't! This is what one of the developers, Andreas Dilger, said about it:

In order to ensure that ext3 can safely resume an unlink after a crash, it actually zeros out the block pointers in the inode, whereas ext2 just marks these blocks as unused in the block bitmaps and marks the inode as "deleted" and leaves the block pointers alone.

Your only hope is to "grep" for parts of your files that have been deleted and hope for the best.
All information is still there, also the block pointers. It is just slightly less likely that those are still there (than on ext2), since they have to be recovered from the journal. On top of that, the meta data is less coherently related to the real data so that heuristic algorithms are needed to find things back.

Quick review: Firefox 3 beta 4 Vs Safari

Both just launched. Both are fast. both are having cool UI. but this is what i got on little testing.

Firefox 3 beta 4

-Good memory handling. now uses less memory then FF 2.
-Browsing is faster then before. Loading time is better now.
-With more number of tabs, memory usage will be in limit. not increasing to exsessive.
-Main problem is only two addons working right now : stumbler and noScript :(
-Better then FF2 in speed, memory usage and UI.
Safari 3.1 final
-Good UI but less configurable compared to Firefox. -Site loading time is very fast. -Initially starts with low memory but gradually reaches at top memory usage (say 160
to 180 mb) with more number of tabs same as Firefox 2.

Both support bookmark/history searching of URLs while typing in address bar.
Loading time is fast in both but safari uses more memory gradually.
So, in final, use Firefox 3 beta or wait for final Firefox.Don't go on safari.

It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials, and plugins.

This release adds a new "Fragment Blur" effect, as well as the ability to save PNG images at 8- and 24-bit color depths. An official Italian translation has also been added.
  • Changed: Most effects and adjustments, including plugins that use IndirectUI, have been visually refreshed. The new look is cleaner and more compact.
  • Fixed: Thumbnails for PDN images now include transparency, which improves their appearance in Windows Vista.
  • New: For developers, added a Color Wheel control to IndirectUI for use in effect plugins.
  • New: For developers, added ability to customize certain properties of the effect configuration dialog via IndirectUI.

Beta 1 Released: February 29th, 2008

  • New: Ability to save PNG's at 8- and 24-bit color depths.
  • New: Ability to save BMP's at 8-bit color depth.
  • New: "Auto-detect" bit-depth option for PNG, BMP, and TGA file types. It will analyze the image and determine the lowest bit-depth that can still save the image without quality loss.
  • New: "Fragment" blur effect, by Ed Harvey
  • New: The "Polar Inversion" distortion effect has been enhanced to allow changing the rendering offset, and the behavior for "edge" pixels (clamp, reflect, or wrap).
  • New: For developers, IndirectUI can now be used to write configuration UI for file types.
  • New: For developers, IndirectUI has a new radio button control type for enumerations, and some new property constraint rules.
  • New: Italian translation.
  • Fixed: In some cases, an exponential property slider would get "stuck" at some values when using up/down keyboard keys. This mostly affects some effect plugins.
  • Fixed: When using keyboard navigation, sometimes the File menu would scroll its items out of view.
  • Fixed: Some crashes that were tracked down to out-of-bounds coordinate values in certain effects.
  • Fixed: The installer would fail if Paint.NET had never been installed before, and was being installed to any non-default directory. This bug only affected version 3.22.

Apple Sued Over iTunes Technology

Apple was sued Wednesday over allegations that its iTunes online music store and iPod music players are illegally using a patented method for distributing digital media over the Internet. Atlanta-based ZapMedia Services Inc. sued Apple in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, accusing the Cupertino-based company of violating two ZapMedia patents, demanding royalties on Apple's sales of iPods and iTunes music, which reached nearly $11 billion last year. The patents in question cover a way of sending music and other digital content from servers to multiple media players, a broad description that could also apply to a wide swath of other companies selling digital media and the devices to play it.

ZapMedia applied for the patents in 1999. One was granted in March 2006, the other on Tuesday. ZapMedia said it met with Apple to discuss licensing, but Apple rebuffed the offer.
"When someone takes our vision and our intellectual property without a license after several attempts, we have no option but to protect it through every means available to us,"
- Robert Frohwein, ZapMedia's general counsel
said in a statement. An Apple spokeswoman said the company doesn't comment on pending lawsuits.

TrueCrypt 5.1

What's New in version 5.1:

New features:

  • Support for hibernation on computers where the system partition is encrypted (previous versions of TrueCrypt prevented the system from hibernating when the system partition was encrypted). (Windows Vista/XP/2008/2003)
  • Ability to mount a partition that is within the key scope of system encryption without pre-boot authentication (for example, a partition located on the encrypted system drive of another operating system that is not running). (Windows Vista/XP/2008/2003)

Note: This can be useful e.g. when there is a need to back up or repair an operating system encrypted by TrueCrypt (from within another operating system).
  • Command line options for creating new volumes. (Linux and Mac OS X)
  • Increased speed of AES encryption/decryption (depending on the hardware platform, by 30-90%). (Windows)
  • Faster booting when the system partition is encrypted. (Windows Vista/XP/2008/2003)
  • When the system partition/drive is encrypted, the TrueCrypt Boot Loader is now stored in a compressed form and is, therefore, smaller. If a non-cascade encryption algorithm is used (i.e., AES, Serpent, or Twofish), the TrueCrypt Boot Loader is now small enough so that a backup of the TrueCrypt Boot Loader can be (and is) stored in first drive cylinder. Whenever the TrueCrypt Boot Loader is damaged, its backup copy is run automatically instead.

As a result of this improvement, the following problem will no longer occur: Certain inappropriately designed activation software (used for activation of some third-party software) writes data to the first drive cylinder, thus damaging the TrueCrypt Boot Loader. The affected users had to use the TrueCrypt Rescue Disk to repair the TrueCrypt Boot Loader. This will no longer be necessary after upgrading to this version of TrueCrypt (provided that the system partition/drive is encrypted using a non-cascade encryption algorithm, i.e., AES, Serpent, or Twofish).

Note: If your system partition/drive is currently encrypted using a non-cascade encryption algorithm (i.e., AES, Serpent, or Twofish), a backup copy of the TrueCrypt Boot Loader will be automatically stored in the first drive cylinder when you upgrade to this version of TrueCrypt.
  • The minimum memory requirements for the TrueCrypt Boot Loader have been reduced from 42 KB to 27 KB (twenty-seven kilobytes). This allows users to encrypt system partitions/drives on computers where the BIOS reserves a large amount of memory. (Windows Vista/XP/2008/2003)
  • Many other minor improvements. (Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux)
Resolved incompatibilities:
  • On some computers, when performing the system encryption pretest, Windows failed to display the log-on screen. This will no longer occur. (Windows Vista/XP/2008/2003)
Bug fixes:
  • On some systems, drive letters were not correctly assigned to newly mounted non-system volumes. This will no longer occur. (Windows)
  • Many other minor bug fixes. (Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux)

Firefox 3, Beta 4

Firefox 3 Beta 4 is now available for download. This is the twelfth developer milestone focused on testing the core functionality provided by many new features and changes to the platform scheduled for Firefox 3.

New features and changes in this milestone that require feedback include:
  • Improvements to the user interface: better search support in the Download Manager, ability to zoom entire page or just the text, continuing look and feel improvements on Windows Vista, Windows XP, Mac OS X and Linux.
  • Richer personalization through: location bar that uses an algorithm based on site visit recency and frequency (called “frecency”) to provide better matches against your history and bookmarks for URLs and page titles, as well as an adaptive learning algorithm which tunes itself to your browsing habits.
  • Improved platform features such as: support for HTML5’s window.postMessage and window.messageEvent, javascript 1.8 improvements, and offline data storage for web applications.
  • Performance improvements: changes to our javascript engine as well as profile guided optimization resulted in significant gains over previous releases in the popular SunSpider test from Apple, web applications like Google Mail and Zoho Office run much faster, and continued improvements to memory usage drastically reduce the amount of memory consumed over long web browsing sessions.

Security hack: Developer's Backdoor Hack in G-Archiver for GMail

A serious Gmail account hacking backdoor, has been found in the popular Gmail archiving software G-Archiver. This application, in all its innocence, allows you to download and backup all emails from your GMail account. But apparently the developer included the code to send an email to his email ID with all usernames and passwords!

G-Archiver has posted this explanation of what happened: "It is urgent that you remove the current version of G-Archiver from your computer, and change your Gmail account password right away. What happened was that a member of our development team had inserted coding used for testing G-Archiver in the debug version and forgot to delete it in the final release version."

Sun's Java VM for iPhone

Sun Microsystems is developing a Java Virtual Machine for Apple's iPhone and plans to release the JVM some time after June, enabling Java applications to run on the popular mobile device. According to Eric Klein, vice president of Java marketing at Sun, the JVM is to be based on the Java Micro Edition (ME) version of Java. Although Apple had not shown interest in enabling Java to run on the iPhone, Sun plans to step in and do the job itself after having pondered Thursday's release of an SDK for the iPhone by Apple.

"Now, the iPhone is open" as a target platform, Klein said. The free JVM would be made available via Apple's AppStore marketplace for third-party applications. "We're going to make sure that the JVM offers the Java applications as much access to the native functionality of the iPhone as possible...It's a new platform for us. We might be able to bring additional technologies onto the iPhone and the iTouch."

New Camera Can See Through Clothes

British company ThruVision has developed a new camera, the T5000, that can detect weapons, drugs or explosives hidden under people's clothes from up to 25 meters away in what could be a breakthrough for the security industry. The camera uses "passive imaging technology" to identify objects by the natural electromagnetic rays -- known as Terahertz or T-rays -- that they emit. The technology works on the basis that all people and objects emit low levels of electromagnetic radiation. Terahertz rays lie somewhere between infrared and microwaves on the electromagnetic spectrum and travel through clouds and walls.

The high-powered camera can detect hidden objects from up to 80 feet away and is effective even when people are moving. It does not reveal physical body details and the screening is harmless, the company says. "Acts of terrorism have shaken the world in recent years and security precautions have been tightened globally," said Clive Beattie, the chief executive of ThruVision. "The ability to see both metallic and non-metallic items on people out to 25 meters is certainly a key capability that will enhance any comprehensive security system."

Jabber Client Psi 0.12-RC1 released...

After only a little over four months since 0.11's release, the Psi team are delighted to announce that the first release candidate prepared for the 0.12 release. This is a great step towards a more regular release cycle, which we're sure everyone will appreciate, but this does not mean that 0.12 will be lacking in the new and cool. Recognising that Psi's user interface could be more usable at times, the majority of our changes for 0.12 revolve around usability.

The most important are:

Tabbed MUCs.

Tabbed chat has been very well received in previous releases, but has only gone to highlight just how badly tabbed groupchat/muc was needed, so we've gone ahead and implemented this. Those of us who've been using this new feature for a while can't understand quite how we did without it, and various options are available for you to tweak exactly whether mucs and chats are tabbed together, or seperately, or not at all.

Improved roster search.

The roster search function has been improved, and will now filter the roster down to only matching contacts, making it much easier to find your contacts in the list.
