Throw it away: Virgin and BPI oposite to illegal downloaders

Virgin Media and the British Phonographic Institute (BPI) are to send warning letters to customers they believe are downloading or distributing music illegally. The announcement represents the first such public deal between the BPI and an ISP.

The pair hope that the new campaign will avoid users risking disconnection and possible legal action.

"Virgin Media's fibre optic broadband is a great platform for people who want to download lots of music,"

said Virgin Media in a statement.

"But we want them to do so without infringing the rights of musicians and music companies."

Customers whose accounts appear to have been used to distribute music in breach of copyright will receive "informative letters" from Virgin Media and the BPI.

What's this? I mean no one is free? This is too much. I mean all the artists and makers of movies and music are already getting much more then they need. They are 'they' because of people like them. People like them because maximum people watch or here them, out of them many are using pirated copies but it makes them more fans. They say they loss money, but i think they got popular with piracy. What you think? If Virgin media is doing this, then what you could download you can understand ;). So better don't use it, throw away it and take some another connection if possible which is not having such crappy rules about how your should use the network after paying much money to keep their mouth shut!

I think all media must be free to public once its out of theaters or published. If they don't like piracy, don't buy bulk pricey expensive DVDs,CDs etc. They made by us, can be fallen by us!

Microsoft Videos BETA: A Silverlight Promotion?

Microsoft Videos lets us explore and watch Microsoft's collection of online video. The whole experience is built using Microsoft Silverlight platform. The site is a collection of all types of Microsoft videos which includes demos, advertisements, tutorials, press releases, Microsoft Research videos etc. We can scan through Quick Picks for the latest videos, or enter a search for a particular video and we can also choose from one of the given Video Categories.

I have checked the site. It seems quite good for developers who want to lear new MS technologies using video tutorials. Ans think MS is giving it free is a big zing! :) But see the screenshot i have attached. On homepage, it will ask to install Silverlight. Again MS is doing a promotion of silverlight as i think :). But though, nice to check if you need something.

Adobe Flash Player 10 beta

Adobe today rolled out a beta version of its Adobe Flash Player 10 (formerly called Astro) browser plug-in, which adds features to help designers and developers create special effects and cinematic Web experiences.

The new offering adds support for custom filters and effects created using Adobe's Pixel Bender tool kit, Adobe said. The Pixel Bender technology is used in the company's After Effects CS3 tool, which creates motion graphics and visual effects for film and broadcast.

"We're doing things that really change the game of what's possible on the Internet,"

said Tom Barclay, senior product marketing manager of Flash Player.

"The community now has the ability to upgrade the capabilities of the player and create new types of effects and cinematic experiences that are not available with any other browser plug-in."

The beta version of the player also includes native 3-D transformation and animation capabilities, an extensible rich-text layout, and graphics processing unit hardware acceleration, he added.

YouTube India is Launched

With News Corp's MySpace having launched in India, can Google-owned YouTube be far behind? The popular video-sharing Web site today launched its local Indian version at www.youtube.co.in.

YouTube India is different in that it features a localized home page plus search functions, allowing users create and share videos, discover the most popular/relevant videos in India, and generally connect with other Indian and global users. Over time, YouTube India is expected to have an entirely 'local' flavor and feature content and functionality that is most desired by Indian users.

YouTube India sports local features like promoted videos, featured videos, home page promotions, localized user interface and help center, user support and community features (video ratings, sharing, and content flagging), and intends making easier for the Indian YouTube community to search and view videos from India. In addition, content uploaded by users in India would show up as 'top favourites' and 'recommended content' on the local YouTube Web site. YouTube India also aims at facilitating exchange amongst the large Indian NRI community.

Meanwhile, YouTube India has already inked partnerships with the likes of UTV, NDTV, India TV, Zoom TV, Rajshri Films, Eros Entertainment, IIFA, the Ministry of Tourism, IIT Delhi, and KrishCricket to name a few, with the objective of bringing exclusive Indian content to users in newer ways. Microsoft Launches UltimatePC.com...

Microsoft has provided an update for its Vista Ultimate plans. UltimatePC.com is a new website where Microsoft is hosting "blueprints" of the best PCs available and exactly what you can achieve with them. Although the domain name was transferred last October, Microsoft has only decided to make use of it now.

A small section of the site is "ultimate exclusives". According to Microsoft these are not replacing Ultimate Extras. The reason given for the poor amount of extras is the high amount of testing and quality required for them to ship. I would love to see Microsoft simply release powertoys like they did with XP. In Vista you are not even able to right click a picture and resize it quickly without using 3rd party software. Extras like the XP powertoys are similar to what people expect.

Windowsultimate.com will be directed to ultimatepc.com. Microsoft is teaming up with various partners to offer discounts to ultimate customers. It's not clear how they will ensure only ultimate customers have access to the discounts. One of the interesting discounts available is Stardock's Multiplicity Pro for only $29.95 .

Until Microsoft start providing a time line about Ultimate Extras this is little more than a marketing site with little benefit to those who have paid a premium price for a poker game and to play videos as desktop wallpapers. Hopefully the new site will provide a place for the ultimate team to communicate to the community its current and future plans.

YouTube to Improve Usage Metrics

Google's YouTube will soon give marketers more data about viewership of its videos, so that they have a better understanding of clips' reach and effectiveness at boosting brand awareness and sales. The online video site plans to make more granular metrics available in this year's second and third quarters, including data about the usage of YouTube videos that are embedded in external sites, said Brian Cusack, YouTube sales team manager.

"YouTube has enormous amounts of data, but not great reporting on that data yet," Cusack said during a keynote speech at the eRetailer Summit in Miami on Monday.

DivX Announces to Shut Down Stage6.com

DivX, Inc., a digital media company, today announced that the Company will cease operation of its Stage6.com video service on February 28, 2008.

Following an exploration of strategic options that began in July 2007, the Company has decided to cease operation of the site and focus its resources on the Company’s core DivX technology licensing business while also continuing to power the distribution of DivX video content on third-party sites.

“Our core business is to work with a wide variety of partners to give consumers a high-quality digital video experience on any device or platform,” said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. “By no longer expending resources on Stage6, we sharpen our focus on creating a global standard for digital video while building a business that maximizes shareholder value. We will provide more information related the Stage6.com shutdown on our fourth quarter earnings call, scheduled for March 11, 2008.”

Videos on Stage6.com will be available for viewing and download through February 28, 2008. The Company will work with certain content publishers to migrate content to alternative web distribution platforms.

Apple - iPhone is 16GB, iPod touch 32GB !

Apple today announced new iPhone and iPod models with larger memory capacities to solve the ever growing craze for more portable storage. This move doubles the amount of memory that was previously available on the top iPhone and iPod models.

Both new models (the 16GB iPhone and the 32GB iPod Touch) will sell for US$499.

Apple will continue to sell the 8GB iPhone and the 16GB iPod touch for US$399 each. Apple will also continue the junior 8GB iPod touch at US$299.

Some analysts are worried that a potential U.S. recession could affect sales of luxury items such as these portable devices. Apple stock is down more than 33 per cent this year.
