yes, google talk can be used on your pc with any chat client which supports jabber protocol.You need to set following settings in jabber connection settings.
username: your gmail username without gmail.com (i.e if abc@gmail.com then give abc as username).
password: give your password.
Login Server: gmail.com
You must use SSL connection.
Connection host: talk.google.com
port:5223

Hey its because gtalk is built on jabber open source
yes you are right, but most of the people don't know that and they use gtalk by google. but what i feel is you should use some utility which supports all chat protocols. i.e miranda IM, gaim and many more.. just goto www.jabber.org and see the list of jabber client available for different OS and platforms.
